Frequently asked questions

How is my UK take-home pay calculated?

Your take-home is gross salary minus income tax, National Insurance (NI), student loan and pension contributions. For 2024/25 the personal allowance is £12,570; basic rate (20%) applies up to £50,270; higher rate (40%) up to £125,140; additional rate (45%) above that. NI is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above. The personal allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 above £100,000.

What tax year does this use?

This calculator uses the UK tax year 2024/25 (6 April 2024 – 5 April 2025) rates and thresholds for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish taxpayers pay different income-tax rates (the calculator does not apply Scottish bands).

Does the calculator include salary sacrifice pension?

The pension slider reduces your taxable income before tax and NI are calculated, which is how salary-sacrifice schemes typically work. Workplace pensions using "net pay" arrangements give the same result. "Relief-at-source" schemes would calculate slightly differently — if in doubt, check with your payroll.

Which student loan plan should I choose?

Plan 1 is for English/Welsh students who started before Sept 2012. Plan 2 is Sept 2012 – Aug 2023. Plan 4 is Scotland. Plan 5 is Sept 2023 onwards. Postgraduate loans repay at 6%. Check your loan statement if unsure.
